“You know, he’s from The Bronx,” every announcer will be sure to mention as John Orozco begins a gymnastics event. (No seriously, watch this.) Orozco started in gymnastics when he was eight after a free lesson and just kept going from there. He is the first Olympic gymnast to come out of the Bronx, and he’s Puerto Rican to boot. Meanwhile, teammate Danell Leyva was born in Cuba, has two parents who competed for the Cuban Olympic Gymnastics team, and his stepfather defected to the USA during a competition in Mexico by swimming across the Rio Grande. Orozco and Leyva present kind of a double ‘WTF’ moment for Bob Costas and crew. “It’s amazing,” says one announcer during the Olympic Trials. “The two best American gymnasts: One from Cuba and the other from The Bronx. Go figure.”

That’s right, NBC. We do more than just run track and play basketball and baseball and like Chris Rock said, just you wait until we find a heated hockey rink.
