A Darker Nerd Harlem

It’s kind of sad, really. There is a lot of television out there that I find problematic. There are a lot of show runners out there who I find problematic. Yet, when it comes to shows like The Vampire Diaries, The Big Bang Theory, or Teen Wolf, there’s the redeeming factor of an at least slightly engaging entertainment value.

You read that right: I’m more engaged watching The Big Bang Theory than I am watching Girls.

The point is, while I’ll still critique them, I’m perfectly capable of enjoying things written by people I find distasteful so long as they’re somewhat entertaining. Girls is not that, and that makes Lena Dunham’s various shenanigans even more frustrating. She gets away with a lot for producing some extremely average work.

But, hey. That’s being white in Hollywood, isn’t it?

I am super bored with Girls. Here’s why

halfaplanecrash asked: Hey! I want to talk about Lena Dunham with you. Like- I'm seeing what your posting and I'm totally up for getting up in arms about POC/WOC representation in the media, but there's also some "lena dunham being terrible/hate that girl" stuff on your blog- is it just because of lack of representation in Girls or is it something else?

There’s a fairly comprehensive list here of why I find her to be a tiresome human being. Also I wrote about it here.

I was saying to a friend earlier, I would find her about 10x less offensive if I actually enjoyed the thing she’s getting all the hype for. I enjoy a lot of stuff from creators I find to be tiresome, annoying, and vaguely racist, but —not gonna lie— I let them get away with a lot more because they’re producing material I like. Lena Dunham has the misfortune of being kind of vile, being overhyped for a show that I just do not understand the appeal of, and being a poor representative of a college that deserves better.

Also: “Being the only Caucasian in a room, you almost feel invisible because you are so visible. When you’re in Mexico or someplace, at least they want your paper dollars.”

Those are actual words that she wrote down. So. Yeah.

Anonymous asked: but... you've never ever seen 4 white girls hanging out with each other? because i dont find it an uncommon occurrence

Never, actually. Not once in my entire life.

(Oh my God, please go read some things.)

This article on S2 of Girls links to my earlier article for Racialicious, yet still manages to come to the conclusion that,

But the racial critique of “Girls,” while understandable, felt mostly beside the point. The world of the show was small because the world of its characters was small. It was not so farfetched to imagine that the small posse of Oberlin grads on the show had a mostly white social circle.”

Over on twitter pulling my hair out right now.

Plus, she goes on to write how Donald Glover’s addition to the cast is so much different than Ayisha Tyler and Gabrielle Union on Friends because Glover is so much more of a fleshed out character. But then writes,

Glover’s arc on the show is brief, but he is key to illustrating the limited scope of Hannah’s experience.

That indicates to me that he’s not a character. He’s a prop and response to the racial criticism she took. No different than Tyler or Union on Friends.

Ugh. Whatever.

The quoted sentence demonstrates that Dunham is incapable of conceiving a rationale for writing that doesn’t serve the goal of drawing attention to herself.
Gawker had to take down Lena Dunham’s leaked book proposal, but that doesn’t mean its writers have to be nice to her. (via entertainmentweekly)
I believe you mean drugged and raped and murdered.
I’m really enjoying watching Lena Dunham dig her hole. It’s the best.
