Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs || Merrie Melodies 1943
I have a long cultivated collection of banned cartoons, because racism in cartoons is a secondary favorite subject of mine and Coal Black is my favorite/the one I’m most fascinated by. Not only is it as racist as all get out, it’s the perfect example of something that’s racist as all get out while trying to ‘pay tribute to’ and ‘celebrate’ Afro-American culture.
Musically, it’s actually quite good. Which is a shame give, y’know, everything else.
It’s just one of those things I feel like people should see and understand (along with all the other banned WB cartoons) before citing Space Jam as a childhood favorite.
Bonus fact: Dorothy Dandridge’s sister is the voice of ‘So White.’—
